How to Move a Wordpress Blog or Site to a New Address or Host
Easiest Way to Transfer a Wordpress Site in 7 Minutes
Moving a wordpress site to a new domain name or hosting provider is not a straightforward process. This publication is designed to show the best way of doing so in plain English.
Steps to Take:
Install a fresh wordpress site onto the new domain.
Use Filezilla to download the "wp-content" folder from your old domain to some place on your hard drive (remember where you are storing the folder).
Upload the stored "wp-content" folder to the folder of the website (or blog) you are trying to create. Choose to overwrite the content. You are essentially replacing the default. "wp-content" folder with the "wp-content" folder of the old site.
Login to your new Wordpress site by going to http://www.yoursite.com/wp-login.php
Choose to activate all plugins and themes that you used on the old site.
There is something called an "update urls" plugin, but that is not required here.
Create a backup of the database associated with the old wordpress site (the site you want to move). In Godaddy, this is done by going to the Hosting tab, Clicking "Launch," clicking the "Databases" tab and selecting "My SQL."
Find the database of the old domain you were using. Select "Actions" and go to "Backup" (make note of where the backup is saved. Usually this is in the "public" folder where all of your domains are stored.
Note: If you cannot find the database, go into hosting. Under "manage my applications" click the management system, wordpress, and find the install associated with the domain name.
On the same screen, find the database linked with the new domain wordpress install. Select "Actions" and go to "Restore." A list of database choices will populate. Choose the database of the old install.
Now on the SQL Databases page will show the old database under the new database name.
Click the Phpmyadmin icon associated with the new database (we are going to change). Login to Phpmyadmin.
Click Databases. Then Choose the one to be changed.
Under the "wp_options" row, click the "browse" icon button.
Under the "siteurl" row.
Click the pencil icon to edit. Change the url address to the new domain. Click "go" to save change.
Now while still in the "wp_options" table, on row number 37 (may be on next page), click the pencil icon to edit the "home" row under the same option_name table. Change the url address to the new domain again. Click "go" to save the change.
Viola, the wordpress migration process is complete on the url of your new site address.
